335i or...

get another E46 M3, 15k will buy a beautiful one

or if you can cope with the practicality a Cayman

+1

I think the E46 is much more special and although the 335i is capable, I find it a bit boring really. With you having the M3 already I think what Rotty says is 100%

No it won't - not unless its modified. It's almost 40bhp down for a start, and weighs more.

Thinking about it, wondered how many M3's you actually launched against in your 335i?

None, I can't remember ever pulling up at the lights conveniently next to an M3 in any car so I'm not sure when that would have been able to happen anyway. In the real world almost nobody 'launches against' M3's anyway, thats just internet hero talk :p

The 335i was quick - usefully so - but it isn't an M3 and it doesn't defy physics. It weighs more and has less power than the M3. It's not as fast as an M3 and IMHO it's really that simple.

Remapped is a different story, obviously.

Agree with Fox, I love my 335i but it's no M3 just a good compromise.

Standard 335i will be ever so slightly behind a M3 from a standstill unless, you know how to brake boost. Remapped it will leave it in its wake. Mine will quite happily take on M5's :)

Strange you mention physics when bhp has little to do with acceleration from a standing start.

As for internet hero talk, how often have you been to a 1/4 mile event ? Or is your basis again on something you have read? I go with the 2nd option.

Power to weight ratio is an important part of acceleration. The M3 has a noticeably superior power to weight ratio than a standard 335i.

Worst 'My 335i is an M3 beating rocket ship' post ever :p

The standard 335i is not as fast as an E46 M3. A modified one is. Thats pretty much that - no bias in my thoughts either as I'd never buy an M3 over a 335i, I prefer the concept behind the 335i to the M3 and I prefer the engine in the 335i to the M3. It's not as quick, though.

You didn't even say it was 'as quick' - you said a 335i would show a 'clean pair of heels' to an M3. This is just rubbish, to show a 'clean pair of heels' it would need a considerable performance advantage which it doesnt have, it has a performance deficit versus an E46 M3.

By now have looked at a few of these & today put down deposit on below 07.

@Sparky, can you get those JB4's in UK or Europe or have to import from states?

But it's still a 335i and not an M car. People who judge an M car on how it goes over 1/4 mile or on a straight road miss the point of what an M car is all about.

Don't know what it is about the SE spec, but it makes an awesome performing car look like a run-of-the-mill rep-mobile.

Not sure about the beige interior on a silver car either, but it's all personal choice and as long as you like it then that's all that matters.

Enjoy it buddy :)

You evidently have no idea what you are talking about if you believe that. I bet you'll say that torque is more important for acceleration and power is for top speed, right?

Exactly this.

@Sparky - my original comment was very little to do with a 335i being faster or slower than an E46 M3. The dynamics of the car are totally different, and the engine note is on a different planet to the 335i.

An 07 SE with 400 quid tax and no idrive, was it cheap?

Yes, and i wish tax was £400. Tax is €1,500

The idrive i'm not bothered about, i heard it wasn't much use until 08 models... except you can bluetooth music which would have been nice.

There are seriously only about 10 335i's for sale in the entire country and i needed to get sorted by Wednesday next week!!

Why does everyone who owns a 335i keep banging on about going up against M3s?

Why don't they just buy an M3?

It's the equivalent of me going on about how I can keep keep up with a 996 turbo, but wait, first I need to remap it, fit 2 turbos, widen the tyres, lower it, fit some fancy arbs, a fancy new ECU with boost crap control, and then I will leave it in my dust :D

I think there's something interesting about a 'regular' car can be slightly tweaked (i.e. remapped only) and then become quite fast indeed. The 335i is one of those cars. The problem is that it then gets exaggerated and it turns in to something ridiculous.

The ~ £300 front aero splitter and £40 boot lid spoiler soon sorts that out and makes it look better than an M Sport, IMO.

So the bluetooth is broken, the only thing I specifically wanted. On the radio two dashes instead of phone icon. Apparently a common fault but no cheap fix. Dealers had better sort it or won't be happy!
