at the moment i have a 15 month old amd 3400+ and was wondering if its worth upgrading to this cpu -

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA4000BNBOX) (CP-120-AM)

From a 3400 ...well I suppose a dual core setup would be worthwhile if you will actually make use of both cores or have some multi-threaded applications that you use a lot.

But upgrading from a 3400 to a 4000 is a bit pointless really, the 3400 was socket 754 and ran at 2.4ghz with 512kb of cache if it was a Newcastle core, or it ran at 2.2ghz with 1mb of cache if it was an older Clawhammer core. The 4000 runs at 2.4ghz and has 1mb of cache. Precious little differance really.

However, if you wish to upgrade to a 4000 you will obviously be moving to a s939 motherboard, and gaining dual channel memory and pci-express, a complete motherboard, video card and memory upgrade like that might be worth it, but just changing for the sake of a cpu upgrade is really not worth it in my opinion unless you are going for a dual core.

i am plannin on gettin a new mobo, graphics, ram and cpu. i might go for a dual core as i would use it.

i didn't realise it was a socket 754, so i guess i need a new cpu and cant use the one i have on a new mobo.

well i need to find some extra cash, i will look around for stuff to sell
