3400A64 to 4800x2 - big difference?

Agree with above!

Big difference in multi tasking environments - great when your encoding video whilst listenin to mp3's and surfing the net! But not that big a leap in gaming terms as few developers (at present) include dual core support!

If you can afford it then get it but you may wanna wait for quad core from intel as that'll force down dual core conroe prices and mean you can get a much better pc than the x2 series allow! ;)

Also, if you think i'm biased towards intel in the above statement bear in mind i'm a very happy a64 3700+ user!

u willl see a big difference since the 4800 is essentially 2x 4000 and your on a 1 x 3400, but the biggest difference will come when you decide to scan your pc for viruses, whilst listening to music, chatting to mates on msn, burning a dvd all at the same time, and you will get no apparent slowdown

Which games do you play?

While the CPU plays a big part in gaming, the GPU and memory is what really decides how smoothly they run for the most part. (Currently at least, with multicore games you will notice a very significant difference)

I recently sat a new x1900xt 256 in with my a64 3400+. The difference over my 6800 Ultra was more than a little disapointing - i think the CPU is holding it back.

Now before anyone shouts "Conroe" - as much as i would absolutely love to, I can't afford to upgrade my mobo/cpu and ram all at once. The mobos are fierce expensive, and u also want decent DDR2 ram and a good cooler to overclock. Just getting a 939 4800x2 was a hell of a lot cheaper. And easier. I don't need extreme performance, just improved performance.
