Hi guys my friend is after a gaming pc for his 13 year old son for xmas he mainly plays Gary's mod at the moment , school work and listening to music but i would imagine he will play more newer games soon or later.

i know it's not a lot of cash to play with,he will also need windows, maybe a led case too .

Pre built is fine if there is one worth getting, if not ill put it together.

cheers

Including Windows is going to a a struggle at that budget as it leaves roughly £320 for components. Unless you spend all the cash on components and get the Windows 8 3 month trial.

Gone with an APU build which will play games ok, providing you lower the settings. Modern games will likely struggle to be honest

I'd suggest this variation on the first without Windows:

5800K to save a bit, it can overclock to the same speed as the 6800K.

Faster memory for the APU's graphics, important when gaming with it.

Better motherboard, and supports upcoming Kaveri APUs.

The A55 lacks sataIII and overclocking options, A75 is the minimum I ever use. The Athlon is bit pointless the real advantage of the FM2 socket is having the APU with the IGP. I take Teppics point about the FM2+ socket but I don't think swapping the APU out would be cost effective compared to just dropping in a GPU later on, even a budget 2nd hand one.

Stulid has done the best balanced spec really although pushing the budget. Ideally I'd like a 500W PSU, there is a cheaper Seagate HDD that would help push a little cash in that direction. Remember you get a long warranty on these bits which helps justify the cost, stuff like the case and PSU can be reused which is why I'd prefer to have the 500W supply.

All the best with it bud. I really don't envy your task, that is a really tricky budget to work with.
