A friend of mine is going to uni' and he needs a laptop. He has ask for my help and i have come up with a list of laptops. Tbh i would like some further explanation on the typical going rate with a university prone laptop in 2011. What else would he need i.e laptop bag and what he won't need i.e internet dongle.

  • TOSHIBA Satellite L755D-10U 6GB
  • HP Pavilion g6-1009ea 15.6" Laptop
  • HP g6-1014sa 4GB Quad Core
  • Acer Aspire 5742 15.6 inch
  • Acer Aspire 5742Z 15.6 inch
  • Samsung RV511 15.6 inch

These laptops i have chosen for the following: Intel core i3, ram 4gb no less, dedicated AMD or ge-force n-vidia GPU, 15.6" or ABOVE not really important and a good battery span.

If i missed anything out or would like to give your advice that would be appreciated. i really would not know all the things he would require but im simply trying to get the best bang for buck laptop out there with a chance that if it breaks he wouldnt have any trouble getting it fixed.

P.S he knows nothing about PC's and LAPTOPS
Regards David

Hi There,

With Acer, you need to see a G designation after the numbers to get a dedicated graphics i.e. 5742G. The others are integrated of some sorts.

At this price point you will mostly get the Ati 5470/4570/6310 graphics and Nvidia GT310m none of which are worth having as they are not really up to gaming unless you are into older games or WoW only, so you usually end up sacrificing on the spec elsewhere to get a dedicated graphics.

The HP Pavilion DV series and lower end Toshiba Satellite typically do this. You are better off looking at a Intel gen 2 i3/i5 with HD3000 graphics. http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5470.23698.0.html for comparisons and you can see the list in the middle of the page for rank order.

That Toshiba has the AMD E-350 in which is a very slow processor in competition with the Atoms. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+E-350

The acer aspire 5750 has gen 2 i3 and Intel® HD 3000 Graphics can be had at the bottom end of teh budget and i5 at the top end.

With much browsing i have decided to put the Acer Aspire 5742 15.6 inch 4gb Notebook at the top of my list. there are two options with the 4gb RAM 320gb HD or 6gb RAM and 500gb HD. I will and go for the cheaper £349.99 i didnt want to choose the 6gb version with the larger 500gb at £429.00 as i will probably buy a larger HD with the cheaper version.

My search continues.
