Its really not been my night, i go to take some pictures in the dark and the following happens:

problem 1: 350D onboard flash will not go up when i hit the flash button, and does not pop automatically, plus when manually pulled up it doesnt fire at all and the camera assumes its off, i.e. long exposure. Camera set to full automatic.

problem 2: 430ex, first time i have tried to use this since my car crash destroyed my 300d and it wouldnt fire at all, all the screen works and comes on and it notices the change in zoom from the camera but i have no test pilot and it wont fire when button is pressed.
Only thing i noticed outsides of it is there is a panel missing, am i missing something special?

Is there anything in the settings that could be causing this?? am i being stupid or is it off to the repair shop.

These days flashes are quite complex pieces of kit and so once you've rulled out the battery issue you may never find out what wrong with it. Before you send it off for repair i would check how much it going to cost as it may not be much more expensive to purchase one of the Sigma flash which are quite decent and cost about £100.

To be honest it sounds like it's more a problem with your camera, rather than the flash. You have anyone who also has an SLR to test? I say this as you say your onboard flash isn't firing either.
