hey all, looking to upgrade in the next couple of months and im getting prices for the 350d, theres about £45-50 between the non-USM and the USM kit lens.

Is it worth the extra as i can only find one popular blue camera retailer who sell the usm version.

what does the USM actually do? :s

cheers :D

USM only offers slightly more silent and slightly faster auto-focus, the rest of the lens is exactly the same as the non-USM 18-55.

USM is silver for £530 from high street shop inc canon bag

and the non-usm is black for around £480 in a well known national PC chain

i dont know if id prefer the silver or not, the extra bag is useful, but is the USM lens worth it?

Id save the money and get the body only then spend another £50 - £100 getting a much better lens to do the body justice. The kit lens isn't that bad, just depends what you're going to use the camera for.

yeah the sigma 10-20 is first on my list :D - might have to wait a few months though

Yeah, I went out and bought the 10-20mm Sigma, it's awesome! I'm now saving up for the Tamron 17-50mm which should hopefully be out in the UK shops soon.

I don't hate my kit lens but out of choice I wouldn't use it. I never really go any less than 50mm for the stuff I do so my prime or my telephoto are normally always on the camera :)
