what does this do?
It's used to trigger the flash when the shutter is about to close rather than just after it opens. When used with long exposure shots at night it allows shots where a moving subject is frozen by the flash but has a ghost trail behind it. If you use first curtain sync the ghost trail is in front of the subject and looks very wrong.

I do understand, honest ;) but does anyone have a sample of this technique?

ahhh, so its best to turn this one when capturing the cars at night with the light effect?

Only if you're using flash, if you're just doing light trails type stuff then there's no point in turning it on.

Thanks for that, sorry to go OT a bit but are you a professional photographer and if so what sort of photos do you do?

No, I'm an amateur, any resemblance to professionalism is purely unintentional. :D

I'll photograph most things but I tend to have a very documentary style rather than some of the artistic guys round here. Click the sig below to check out my site (pimp mode off)

ETTL needs a preflash in order to assess the amount of light that it needs to command the flash to output, BEFORE the actual exposure. It needs to do this regardless of 1st vs. 2nd curtain setting simply to pre-assess the light coming back from the scene.

So with 1st curtain, it is preflash, shutter opens and flash, shutter remains open then closes.
With 2nd curtain, it is preflash, shutter opens and stays open, flash, then shutter closes.
