Hi Guys was wondering if I could have some help, I'm an average gamer, web surfer, downloader etc , current config as followers
Cooler master 430 elite mid tower
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P MB
Intel i5 3570k (1155 Socket)
Corsair 16 GB 4x4gb 1600Mhz
Nvidia GTX 260 GDDR 3
OCZ Agility 3 120gb (OS win 10 64bit pro)
2x500gb WD Green HDD in Raid 0
Antec Kuler 620 all in one liquid cooler

I'm wanting to go down to a smaller form factor case and board just
To save space on desk etc, am I to start all over and complete upgrade to z170 or upgrade to z97 obviously both boards would need a new CPU was thinking G3258k and Oc it, and keep my other components, or do I find a Z77 board if so which one and wer to get it there are hard to find , hope you can help and all ideas and suggestions would be most appreciative Ryan

3570k is still a decent cpu and upgrading to a z170 platform wouldnt net you a huge increase in performance especially if you are just web surfing etc. If you are playing games then the most noticeable difference would be a new gpu for sure.

But that depends on the game itself. The gtx 260 is quite old and by no means meant for high end gaming really.

Hi thanks for reply first time on theses forums, I kinda thought the same the 3570k has served me well since it was released , and my seems daft to replace it ,although the prospect of getting a Asus z97 m plus and a g3258k and two 950 GPUs sounds good but not sure with the 3570k been a top gaming CPU still how about if I just upgrade motherboard to a Z77 and get GTX 950 for £119 how about I get two and sli them , you have any suggestions on motherboard tho ?

Welcome to the forums!

The Z97 M plus doesn't support SLI. I've just bought one for an HTPC rebuild and the second PCI-Ex16 slot is only x4 speed.

According to the Gigabyte website, your current board does support SLI and Crossfire, so I wouldn't bother changing it. If you 3570K is happy in that board, stick with it - it's a good CPU.

For graphics cards, don't bother with SLIing 950s, for the same kind of money, or a little more you could get an R9 390:

The 8GB VRAM on the 390 will last you for ages.

This one is pretty decent and comes with a backplate. A single card is usually better than SLI/Crossfire, unless it's SLI 980Ti/Titan X etc. Just make sure you have a decent PSU though because you don't want to run a decent graphics card off an el cheapo CiT PSU...

Thanks Borealis for your in put, it's reassuring that my board is still up for the job, but I'm wanting to go down to M-Atx you have any suggestions?

For m-atx with the 3570k, you're going to have to go second-hand I reckon. If you really have to downsize to M-ATX, you're better off with Skylake as it's the current generation.

I'll try to update in the morning, because I'm exhausted right now...

Had a quick look, and if you do have to downsize, you're looking at a popular online auction site to try and get hold of a second-hand board (can't mention competitors here).

I really wouldn't go with the G3258 and OC it. First it's only a dual-core, compared to the i5 quad-core you're currently using. Second, Z97 is a discontinued platform like Z77, just that there's still stock available. If you do have to upgrade, then go down the Skylake route, but you will need a new board, CPU and RAM for that.

IM in a similar position, my motherboard is playing up especially with the USB ports and if i could source a cheapish motherboard for my 3570K I would. Running the steam VR tester I get a good score with a 970 so i dont really need to upgrade.

But the motherboard is where the pain starts. Trying to find a socket 1155 mb means relying on second hand stuff off auction sites.

Been a few gone through the MM in recent weeks.
