3570K - Strange problem

I'm not sure if this is a CPU issue or not but I'm having major issues with a new build and I was hoping someone could help me.

Started off with the following parts:-

Gigabyte Z77-D3H
Samsung green memory 16GB
Western digital drive 500GB
Antec 650w True Power
Intel 3570K Retail + Cooler

I assembled all parts and ran at stock speeds and installed windows 7 and drivers. During the driver installation I was getting 'explorer not responding' errors, various application errors and eventually a BSOD. I tried several windows installs but every one would end up the same.

I then replaced the motherboard with a MSI Z77A-GD65 (bios 10.7 and 10.8) and encountered the same issues.

I ran memtest 4.20 for 12 hours and this passed without any errors.

Thinking it could be a temperature related issue I replaced the retail fan with a Xigmatek Gaia CPU Cooler, I also replaced the drive with a SSD but still no good.

Tested with onboard video and a HD4850 same result.

Now this is where I am really confused, If I do a clean install of windows 7 64bit without installing anything else and run Prime 95 it will run fine (12 hour test) at full load temp of 50 degrees.

So the system seems stable until I start to install Windows SP1 or ANY drivers or software.

Other than trying another PSU I really don't know what else I can do.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

*** I've also tried Kingston memory.

I would try with only 1 memory stick at a time see if that helps, it could be a dodgy memory controller with all 4 dimms full?

Hi,

I have tried one memory stick in and it's still the same. I have also tried another PSU.

I'm beginning to think it's the memory controller or cache on the processor.

Try multiple sticks on their own and perhaps in different slots, if it's the same then I think you might be right.

I was going to suggest upping memory voltage to 1.5V as it might be the memory controller unstable with only 1.35V but I'm guessing that Kingston memory you tried was higher voltage stuff?

Also just leave coretemp open and monitor temps in normal usage in case it might be throttling under stress.

Hi, I've tried all combinations of memory in different slots but it still BSODS. I'm certain it's the CPU that's faulty. I think I will buy a cheap celeron to test the board and memory and if ok I will return the CPU or RMA to intel.

How would a G550 compare to a E5300 @ 3.6GHz? also, do Intel have a UK RMA department? if so, how easy is it to RMA?

If it's found to be faulty then return it to the retailer if it's less than 12mths old, only go to Intel if it's over a year old.

It's hard to say they are probably going to be similar, the G550 will be a lot faster clock for clock but has 1ghz disadvantage.

I've only had 2 weeks. Purchased from the forest so hopefully I shouldn't have any problems returning it.

Replaced the 3570K with a Celeron G550 and the system is now running OK so definitely a faulty processor. The G550 does appear to be faster than a E5300 @ 3.6GHz.
