My TV will only do 1080p over HDMI (which I'm currently doing via a HDMI cable - no problems there). However, I want the ability to plug some headphones into the 360 so I don't keep the wife awake if I game late. I've just realised that I can't plug the component adapter and the HDMI in at the same time - they don't fit :rolleyes:

Question is therefore, am I really missing out by gaming @ 720 instead of 1080? This is all taking place on a 42" screen. The question is also relevant to a smaller monitor, as I am planning to get a 20/22/24" at some point so need to decide between 1920*1200 (for 1080) or 1680*1050 (for 720).

I am sure if you take the plastic casing of the component cable then both can fit :) does not look good, but if that's what you need to do?

1080i = interlaced

1080p = progressive

The differences between 720p/1080i/1080p are far smaller than you might expect for gaming.

It is. However most games only output at 720p or less, so he wouldn't be losing anything.

If you crack the casing around your component cable you can fit both in at once, or you could plug headphones into the TV.

1080p would be the best, but the difference will be tiny as most of the time, the console is just scaling the signal up to 1080p.

Yep, almost every 360 game is 720p. Very rarely are they 1080p. They will say on the box 720p/1080p etc, but they wont be built at 1080p, just upscaled. Some new games like COD4 and Halo 3 aren't even 720p, so it may even look better at 720p, rather than 1080p for those games in particular.

As has been said (most) games aren't actually being outputted at anywhere near 1080p, so all 1080p means is that the xbox is upscaling the image to 1920x1080. This is job your tv can do adequately and in a lot of cases even better than your 360 can.

So depending on your tv, using 720p via component may even look better than 1080p via HDMI.

Dont think ive found any game that runs 1080p on 360. On my PS3, the dashboard is noticably sharper and so is the GT and Ridge racer demo.
