360 and Resolutions - whats the story?

The practice is worse on 360, because Microsoft originally made noise about their standards for 360 games, where every game had had to be rendered at 720p minimum, along with a load of other stipulations. Then, as soon as some big name game's not up to it, the standards get abandoned.

They are HD, but not 720p. There are a couple more such as PGR3, but it's not like you can tell is it?

learn something new everyday then :D

at what res do we start calling a console game HD?

i usually just go by what the game says on the back

Oblivion GOTY
Heavenly Sword
Motorstorm
Stuntman Ignition

all of them say HD 720p so i assume its been done in 720p but i can upscale it to 1080i or 1080p (if i had a tv which supported it)

I guess on the games you guys are talking about it doesnt say HD 720p on the back??

I dunno what mine is actually running but mines set at 1900x1080 (I think, max res available) through a VGA cable into my 27" dell. Games look bloody fantastic tbh. Burnout Paradise demo and PGR4 look amazing.

Through VGA, how do you put on Progressive Scan? Or does this depend on what resolution you pick?

I just bought a brand new 360 for the hell of it. Although an old school PC gamer, I like the variety. I'm pretty impressed - xbox live has come a long way :)

I'm not so sure about all this HD gaming lark though.

Is it just me, or are games (such as Halo3) rendered at a lower res and then upscaled to 720p/1080p via the 360 hardware scaler? That ain't full HD as far as I'm concerned. Some games look a bit odd, whereas some (like Sega Rally) look absolutely fantastic. How can you tell before you buy a game?

I can live with it, but I was just wondering :)

For the record I'm running at 1080p on a HP h2207w over HDMI.

Sigh, listen here son:
"GFX DO NOT MAKE A GOOD GAME"

I think there are only 4 or 5 games that are rendered lower than 720P aren't there?

I'm actually struggling to think of them though :p

CoD4
Halo3
PGR3
CoD3
THP8

I can't think of any more.

Well Im playign COd4 right now via a 10" LCD and the MS VGA cable - it looks bloody fantastic, not a bad game too mind :)

So this "True HD" 1080p carry on is a load of marketing tosh.

HD DVD and Blu Ray are the only True way to make full use of your 720p/1080p TV?

:p

Can you run 1080P on your 1680x1050 HP 22" monitor??

Actually, yes and no. It will take the signal, but it downscales down to it's native res of 1050p (1650x1050). It's obviously not true 1080p, but it looks a fair bit better than sending a 720p signal to the monitor. The new w2207h verson supports HDMI.

Those are simply mediums to carry information on. DvD can be high definition too, but good luck fitting high definition movies on a 9GB disc. Games aren't so bad.

I don't see the point in going HD at all. My brother has an LCD TV and HD sky and xbox360 of course but to be honest I prefer to play games on my CRT TV it's already 100 Htz and looks great.
I've been searching for about 2 months now for a 37" TV to link to my SKY + (non-HD) and can't find one that has a crisper image than my CRT. For me (apart from the size) CRT = better.

not really you buy a tv as long term investment.

5 years down the line there will be loads of HD channels and they will be broadcasting at 1080p thus 1:1 pixel mapping. Next gen consoles will be out too.

TVs are not a throwaway product and should last a good 5-7 years.

The Sky+ picture is only better on CRT because its Standard Definition as is your Sky+. SD will always look a bit worse on an HDTV than on a SDTV of the same size.
