Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer might have revealed the company's plans for an Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive add-on.

Then again, he may have simply muddled his words again. In an interview with Gizmodo, Ballmer replied to the question of integrating Blu-ray into the Xbox 360 with:

"Well I don't know that we need to put Blu-ray in there - you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives, you can get Blu-ray drives as accessories.

"I think probably the future of movies is mostly on-demand actually as opposed to via distribution on physical media, so we're just going to keep driving forward and try to make it the best entertainment - overall entertainment, not just gaming but overall entertainment - experience we can," Ballmer added.

So the comment on Blu-ray drive accessory is certainly in there and seeing that there used to be an HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, a Blu-ray add-on wouldn't be a far stretch - even though Sony is a major player in the creation of the format.

The move would also mean that to buy an Xbox 360 with Blu-ray may cost significantly more than a PlayStation 3, which has it built in.

An Xbox spokesperson has come out to back-track on Ballmer's comments, stating:

"Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we're not ready to comment."

Of course, Bullmer could be saying that Xbox 360 owners can buy stand-alone Blu-ray players as a separate "accessory."

I assume it would be purely for bluray movies.

Could be a good addition to the console and I can imagine a few people would sell their PS3 if their 360 could play Bluray discs.

Yeah, there's nothing really to say that they're planning a seperate drive actually. :p

Saw the title and gave it a quick read through and thought it may be of some interest. :D
