i have that problem sometimes, it turns out it is my firewall, strange thing is that it works now and again, without my touching the firewalls setting it would work on next reboot...really odd.
no firewall is on though (generally dont have windows one on) and im sure my router one is off. What ports need to be open for 360 to see pc actually? Think i saw them on xbox.com but cant for the life of me find them again..

Shouldn't make any difference - the firewall on the router and opening ports only apply to traffic passing to and from the internet to your local network not to traffic solely between machines on your LAN.
At least that's what I've always understood.
Have you restarted both the xbox and PC and also double check that windows firewall isn't on - even though it shouldn't make a difference as I would have thought media sharing was UPnP so it should poke the right holes in the firewall anyway.
If all else fails there's always TVersity .
EDIT - just noticed your using a switch behind the router any way, so the router is not even involved in traffic on your LAN.
