you have a backup one in case your current one breaks - that is just insanely dumb, so it justs sits there gathering dust and depreciating in value for nothing, i would laugh my ass of it was a dud and when you finally get around to using it, it breaks and your warranty has ran out

why would you buy an xbox 360 now for an xmas present surely it will be cheaper in 6 mnth, and same goes for back up xbox, surely if/when that packs in to buy a new one then will be cheaper.

No not that part

The part about buying something new and then not using it for a long time - that in my opinion would be very foolish. The only reason for doing it would be if the console wasn't being made any more, so you wanted to get a new one while you still could. But you'll be able to get 360s for years yet, and the price will be lower in future, so it's silly.
