So I havent got the RROD, but the single red light, with the E 74 message on my screen, its out of warrenty (tho by about 2 months) and as i understand it this isnt covered by the extended cover...typical.

Have seen lots of do it yourself fixes, I dont mind cracking it open, I self build pcs etc etc, so have a clue, just wondering should I argue with MS Support before giving this ago?

I have no morals so dont worry lol, im about to be laid off work, and MS knowingly producing a product not legally fit for sale, ill happily screw them over as i have never used a copy of anything else from them before.

I find it hard to believe this as Im barly on it, I mostly have used as a handy way to play back DivX films on it TBH, I only have about 4 games for the thing! and only racked up aboiut 500G point thingys over the 14months, never really sitting on it for hours at a time or anything.

God damn it!
Well then as the warrenty has gone I guess I have nothing to lose by opening it up, dont have the money as things are for a new one.

No didnt bother..well atually I did and got some atumated voice thing I couldnt be bothered with, was like a vocalised Troubleshooter lol.

So, what did I do...I wrapped it up and heated the crap out of it...and it worked....for about 5 days...did it again...it worked...for about 7 days...........then a third time....its working again........seeing a pattern lol?

Mine seems to keep working again after I heat it up, so im think about that home kit where you open it up and use some x clamp thing or somthing..anyone know what thats about?

So effectivly your just bolting the thing together abit harder?

Ive read some comments about reflowing the board in the oven, how do i go about that, is that before or after the clamp work?

God dammit, switched it off and on again and now its working!?

Legally MS should have been seriously done for this, i mean of this was anything else their would be serious repercussions for the poor quality of these things!.

Well ive stripped it apart, what do people think about just swtiching it on without the fans connected, after you have done the x clamp fix to reflow the solder.

TBH im scared of putting it in the oven lol.

No, I didnt mod it, so was fine to send back, but after reading everywhere its clear MS dont repair a single failed red light, so figured whats the point.

Ok, oven trick it is, so heat the oven up to about 220 and lean the motherboard in for about 6mins?
Do you do this after the x clamp fix and re-seated the heatsinks.

By the way, after taking it apart, the heat sinks are a ******* disgrace!

edit - No disguised swearing please. Jedi

Just making sure this is how it wrapped, with the under side covered too?

Well I've gone and done all that been discussed and all is working right now, so time will tell how good a job i have done of it, tho i personally feel its couldn't have been done any better in term of how to do the x clamp replacement as well as re-flowing it in the oven for 4 mins.

Thanks for all the input...fingers crossed this lasts now!

All in all as i have Artic cleaners, and Artic5 thermal paste, this cost me 3.50 for the new screws and washers lol, not bad!

Kinda makes me laugh when the bloke tried to sell me an extended warrenty in the shop.....

"...no its ok...I have an oven at home..ill be fine"

Well after lasting this long with the x-clamps removed and the ovan bakes done, it went again on me last night, same thing E74.

May jsut give in and go for the newer 60gb model, least now the E74 is covered in the warrenty.
