My 360 drive just stopped reading any disc yesterday out of the blue which sucks.

Now what are my options? I have a samsung drive and the 360 is about 2 years old. I looked on the bay and it seems you can re buy the exact same drive, what is the procedure though, do you have to edit the firmware for the 360 to accept it ?

Could I send it back to MS for repair? Would they charge me ?

Should I just take it on the chin and get a spangly new 60gb ?

Should I wrap it in a towel put it in the oven and throw it out the window ?

Thanks.

If you get it to RROD are they just replacing motherboards now or the whole console? as if they just dump a new board in the drive will be faulty still. If you can afford it get a nice new 60GB one, the drive space will be useful and it will be the more reliable board.

I can technically afford it but Id rather spend the money on something 'new' if you see what I mean. Seems crazy to have to re buy something I already bought.

Even if you buy the same model drive, you will have to hack the firmware because of the unique encryption keys each drive uses (or swap your drives PCB onto another one!)

It's not a hard job with a little research, but I would be tempted to get it to RROD and send it back for repair.

Ive done it about 5 times on normal drives firmwares, I just didnt know if it was more involved. I should have the key from this drive knocking about somewhere. Is it just the same kind of procedure ? Obv dont go into details.

Its all just such a hassle, why cant the thing just work. When you 360 works you always think its not going to happen to you, you some how forget how annoying they really are.

Think it's a slightly different procedure when spoofing (never done it myself) but if you've done normal flashing it shouldn't be too hard. Probably uses all the same tools.

My first console did this, drive stopped working altogether and destroyed my copy of COD3. sent it off to microsoft saying I had 3RROD and they replaced the board and drive, with no charge, not sure if they even check what is the matter with it half the time.

If it's anything other than RROD you only get 1 year from Microsoft unless you've got extended warranty with the store you bought it from.

If you get the same model drive just swap the pcb from the old drive over to the new one afaik it should work, never tried this though.

or you can always try to fix the drive yourself first, might as well pop the drive open if you're taking the 360 apart anyway. Apparently some of the disk read error are incredibly easy to fix.

Failing all of those then it's new xbox time.

Im a bit reluctant to on purpose bust the 360 itself. Its been pretty faithful outside of the drive just breaking. Never had a crash with this one or anything.

I think Ill try spoofing the drive, swapping the pcb will prob end in disaster unless it simply screwws in and has a ribbon cable connecting it ? I dont really want to open up the actual dvd drive either for fear of not getting it back together.

Drives appear to be about 40 quid.

i had a similar problem a while ago, i was getting artifacts on the screen with certain games. i decided to just cash it in at my local store and then buy the cheapest package i could, sold what extras came with the package and gained hdmi...hurrah!
i think i got £100 cash for the old machine, so much better than letting it die and then paying out for a whole new machine.

Yes, there are videos on youtube showing how to do it.

as you're getting a new one anyway don't think there's any harm trying to take the old one apart.
