Hi all

A friend has just bought his 360 round as for some reason the DVD decides not to read DVDs.

Some it plays through just fine, others have cd error as soon as they start, others after a certain amount of time.

He bought a couple of the DVD's round with him to try, and there is nothing physically wrong with them.

Any ideas?

yep, flashed imo.

if there is nothing wrong with the DVD's i.e there not boot-leg and there are no physical marks/scratches then somthings not right.

I don't think its flashed, I know it had an RROD fix as I did it. Both DVDs are legit too.

Going to strip it down and clean it as he's just text saying that it sticks as well on opening.

Messaged him back and asked if its flashed. Is that a common issue then?

Or the disc drive is knackered?

My old Xbox is now gathering dust as it stopped reading most discs or would throw up errors and make some nasty noises, unfortunately it was over 2 years old so out of warranty

Why jump to the conclusion that it's flashed?

The DVD ROM drives in these aren't the most reliable things and over time the laser does weaken, it's not totally out of the question that it's simply worn out with normal use. Especially if he didn't realise that you could install games to the hard drive.

If the warranty is up, you can open the console up and take the DVD drive out, if you then strip down the drive you'll find a tiny potentiometer next to the laser which controls the resistance, you can turn this very slightly to increase or decrease the resistance, decreasing will allow more power to the laser and it should then be able to read discs again.

You'll need a multimeter though.

360 DVD drives are one of the more notorious failures, tending to suddenly start spouting "Open Tray" instead of "Play Game" or "Play DVD" on screen.

Sometimes ejecting the drive multiple times will get it back, but it's likely on the way out.

Is there a guide to this and what settings you set this to? As I could revive my old xbox!

I have a multimeter to hand too!

Cheers

All the people dribbling that it 'must be flashed' clearly know nothing about how c4eva's firmware hack actually works!! Otherwise they wouldn't be making statements that make them look very foolish.....

Wind your neck in boyo. I was not jumping to any conclusion, I was just asking if he knew if it was flashed. Just going off another post on these forums about some games not working since the update if the user had a flashed drive.

The OP even said he didn't know if it was flashed, and had to ask his mate.

Copied games do and can wear the laser quicker as optimum power calibration takes place each time a disc is inserted, and because a recordable disc is less reflective than a pressed disc, the laser uses a higher power.

Holy Carp :O talking about stuff like that c.r.a.z.y. guy is gonna get this thread locked/deleted and the linky by pike is gonna be the nail in the coffin.

We're not talking about piracy, I'm saying how flashing can be related to drives going bad.

The thread is about helping the OP getting a working console again.

My drive died on my release 360, it would just say 'play dvd' whenever a game was inserted or failed to read disk if a dvd was inserted.
Taking the drive to bits and cleaning the laser lens worked for me (drive was full of dust as well), when i took the drive apart it looked like something - maybe one of the rubber grommets from the drive rails had melted onto the circuitry as there was loads of melted black gloopy stuff all over part of it, but cleaning it out as best I could got it working again and has been going for the last 6-7 months.
