every now and then for the last couple of months i've been getting 'disc unreadable' errors while playing games.

yesterday i started getting 'unplayable disc' from the dashboard even though i was playing the game before going back to the dash...

normal dvd's are ok, its only game disc's that dont work. it sounds to me like the drive isnt spinning up to the normal speed when a game disc is in.

is there any fix for this other than changing the drive? i've tried a dvd lens cleaner disc.

if i need to change the drive, which is the best/quietest one to go for? i've had a look at replacements and they advise i'd need to extract a key or something from my current drive to get it to work? anyone done this before?

the 360 is about 2 years old so out of warranty

cheers
Steve

Changing the drive is possible, and relatively easy, but invalidates your warranty and can't be talked about here .

There's a big scene site that will cover everything you need to know on the subject.

ok cheers, i'll have a hunt about :)

strangely enough the drive is working this afternoon, but i havent been back to the dash to swap games yet...

i've had the exactly same problem with my xbox 360 dvd for too long. it would start giving me read error messages 10 minutes into any game i played and often would scratch my game discs. the reboot would fix the issue temporally but i got fed up so i just sent it back yestarday to microsoft while its still under warranty. i hope they fix it but i hopped it would die completely so i would get brand new one.

My 360 Drive is dieing. Doesn't half make some loud noises some times. Plus for some reason i've played PGR4 a hand full of times but the last 2 times i put th disk in i got "To play this game put it in an Xbox 360 Console" and Halo 3 crashes on the first attempt to start the game i have to restart the 360
