I just bought an elite on monday from a local retail store, but didn't get a chance to test it until today.
Everything works fine- hooked up to a 226bw; great. :)
The noise leaves something to be desired. =/
Now, it's sitting horizontal on my desk, about 70cm away from me.
Being my first console, I don't have much experience in this side of things. The noise that bothers me is a constant drone, similar to a ceiling mounted fan in some hot countries.

I am wondering, am I entitled to get a replacement for what is essentially not a vital issue? (well to me it is vital, but the console works, so I don't know whether this would be allowed).

At 70 centimetres distance I gurantee you will not get a 360 you cannot hear audibly. a) you are sitting very close to it, and b) it just is not a quiet device!

You can swap it in most high street shops I reckon but there is no way to know if your replacement will be louder. You may have to argue a bit I reckon as it is not technically a fault, like RROD for instance. Like most users you will get accustomed to the noise, although I do appreciate some people are more sensitive to it than others. (myself included)

A lot of users find the 360 loud, unfortunately if you mention it on this forum, a 360 fan will come along and tell you that they can't hear it over their 5.1 sound system or their PC that is on 24/7. :D

Yeah, I suppose the chance of getting a quieter one is pretty slim. Yes, I have quite sensitive ears, but as you say, hopefully I will just be able to screen it out.
Anyhow, I'll pop into the retailer tomorrow and ask if it is possible; and pick up a copy of halo 3 as well.

They're damn noisy and it's a lucky dip with the noise level of any particular 360 console.

Mine is silent at the moment. Has been packed up ever since Warhawk came out, and Heavenly Sword. :p

Tomorrow I am gonna dust it off, for Halo 3, I am sure the noise will shock me, as it always does these days, when I tun it on very infrequently. Never bugged me as much as it does now I have a much quieter, although not silent, console (PS3).

I must say I'm a bigger fan of the 360 but the PS3 is great to watch films on!

Thats the reason i got rid of mine the noise drove me > i like to game at 3 - 4 in the morning and did not wish to turn the sound up just to drown out the console, the 360 was a thorn in my side form day one good ridence to it.

Was twice the noise of my main rig.

ps great games thou.

PS3 is exactly the same

i think unfortunately that noise from consoles is going to become increasingly unavoidable as they get more and more powerfull

PCs have been noisy for years, consoles have done well to get this far ..

really ?

i think the noise on the PS3 is shockingly loud for a console. And everybody complained at launch how loud it was

is the 360 louder still then ?

Only way I've managed to get my PS3 to get loud is by starving it of ventilation, then the fans went mental. Just as well I noticed the duster that'd been left sitting down the side of it.

With normal ventilation though it's pretty rare the fans ramp up.

yeah the PS3 is infact much much quieter than the 360, the x-box is just plain annoyingly noisy, could always mod one to make it silent, x-box a' la heatpipe, just a thought ;)
