ok so im trying to hold off buying a 360 but i have money burning a hole in my pocket,

my ps3 is maxxed out with new hd, all new games, 2 dual shocks 3's, playtv etc.

Gears of War 2 looks great, cant deny that.

I can get an elite for £170 from the good old USA (comes with a free cheeseburger) but will it play UK xbox 360 games?

May i recommend a UK premium instead? 60gig harddrive these days don't you know and aside from being white it's identical to an elite.

£169.99 delivered, spiffing!

i think you get the official MS hdmi cable with the Elite. (on its own priced at £30) Which makes a couple of things a smidgeon easier.

Totally not worth it tho buddy surely? Cheap £5 HDMI cable will do the job identically due to the digital sexyness that it utilizes.

if you want to make use of the optical out port for DD quality sound + also have the cheap HDMI cable (and not the £30 MS ripoff cable) then basically its screwdriver time.... (flat bladed screwdriver use that to uhh dismantle the casing around the cable)

The actual optical input is ON the cable not the console... The component cable itself is engineered so that you cannot plug in that cable AND a hdmi cable at the same time (the two ports are too close together)....without smashing up part of the cable....lol good ole MS.

i was sitting there in the living room in front of the 360 - thinking wtf when i realised this myself

i have a 26" samsung hd tv and there is only 1 HDMI port, can u get splitter boxes or would i just have 2 swap them over?

A lot of games are region free so a lot of UK games will work on a US 360. I have both a US and a UK 360 for the games that are region locked, but the vast majority will play on both. As a general rule, all EA games are locked (though there's a couple of exceptions). There's plenty of sites out there that do have region compatibility information.

If you get a US 360 though you'll need either a beefy stepdown or a UK PSU which will be another £20 to £30 on top.

Can you provide links to the regional compatibility info for 360 games? That would be good to have a glance at.

The big high street games store are selling Elites with FIFA09 & Fable 2 free... you'll get £50 trade in for both those games if you don't want them. Effectively making the Elite £180.

I emailed them and they responded with this;

Dear Customer,
For our European customers we ship from Rome,Italy so you will not have to pay any custom taxes or VAT. All items are compatible with the UK voltage and have UK specs. If your order is over 500 usd the shipping is free of charge and it takes two working days.
Thank you for using our service,

The 360 is region locked. End of story.

It might be compatible with our voltage, but it won't play the majority of UK titles.

Wrong - well, it is region locked, but a US console will play the majority of UK games - certainly over 50% of UK releases aren't region locked. It's the minority of games that are region locked. Almost all EA games are region locked but a few examples of recent games that aren't are:

Fallout 3
Quantum of Solace
Scene It Box Office Smash
Guitar Hero World Tour
Saints Row 2
Fable II
Far Cry 2

There's many more too. Also the US 360's PSU only accepts 110v - it will need a stepdown or a new UK PSU to function in this country otherwise it'll blow up. I have two of the useless bricks at home unfortunately.

However, if I was buying my first 360 I would want a UK machine just so I don't have to worry about having to check region compatibility and import a handful of titles I'd want to play that are locked. I only own a US 360 to play games that are released there first (ie. Rock Band 2) but the UK console is clearly my main machine although as most games are region free, I just chuck them into whatever console is powered up :)

Bugger was just about to ask this, is there no way to get that little digital audio dongle seperatly? (Apart from buying an Elite or the £30 MS HDMI pack)

Nope they don't sell it seperately. Your only other option is to find someone who bought an Elite and doesn't use the included audio dongle and get it off them.
