360 Fan Noise

Got a 360 the other day and the fans are driving me nuts. Its not the *whoosh*
of the air flow through the vents thats bothering me its the high pitched whine of the fan motors. Its definately the fans as it changes intensity in sync with variations in the volume of the whooshing noise (all technical terms :p )

Is this normal ? I sought out a recording of a 360 and could hear the whoosh but no whine, however when I recorded the sound of my 360 on my pda from the same distance there was a whoosh but no whine so I guess you need a mic with a decent range to pick it up. To the human ear its very noticeable though.

Its final position will be in the lving room around 12ft from seating position so I'm pretty sure it wont be too noticeable then but its wether its normal or a fault in the fans I'm worried about.

So, do your fans whine and/or I'm stuck up or should it go back ?

I havent put anything in the drive apart from a test DVD so far. Bad news if it is pretty silent otherwise as that probably means mine has a fault.
It whines like a gang of 20mm Northbridge chipset fans in the pub at happy hour.

:/

Mine's pretty loud and I can hear the whine of the motors when they change speed etc, but I cant blame it really, its sat on my desk around 2 - 3 feet from my head. I dont notice it when I'm playing games much though the volume of the TV easily drowns it out.

Mine used to make a whining sound when the fan was on a certain speed (It changes depending on the heat of the machine). Then one day it just stopped. It is still loud (subjectively), but the whine sound annoyed me more, which is not the case anymore.

I don't know if the shop would take it back because of the whining sound. Microsoft might if you call them directly.

Plugged my new one in last night and the fans gave out an annoying reeeEEE........reeeEEE........reeeEEE........reeeEEE but luckily it stopped after 10 minutes. Fans running in I guess

Some people say that their xboxes are silent, or that some are quieter than others, but from my experience its all subjective, depends where you have them and even how warm the room is that its placed in, the warmer the room the harder the fans have to work. Comparing my launch day console to a brand new console bought ther other day the noise difference is negligible.

Thanks folks, its pretty well ventilated where it is but its a small room, long term itll be going into a much larger room with a ceiling fan which will help come Summer.
I notice the underside (if its sat horizontal, left as you face it if its vertical) gets pretty hot, wonder if a laptop cooler would help.

I found the same. The noise difference that I did hear was probably due to clean fan blades as opposed to ones with a years worth (or hundreds of hours of use) of dust stuck to them.

I also found that the DVD drive seemed almost as noisy just that the new one lacked the buzzing vibration of my old one, although I'm sure that was down to a slightly faulty drive.

Sorry to hijack this thread but it's kind of related. Do any of you guys who have just bought new 360's notice the DVD drive as being loud? I heard they were fitting new quieter BenQ drives in all new 360's being manufactured and want to know if they have got any better. I'm considering chopping in my 360 premium against an Elite.

Brand new one bought last night. Just as loud, just less vibration at spin up/spin down but as I said that could be my old drive being faulty.

EDIT- was a Core if that makes a difference.

Mine says manufactured October 06 yet looking at the pictures of the Samsung and Hitachi trays it looks like neither, it has small round hole in the tray at the near side.

Looking again at the picture I found of the trays mine might be a Samsung, theres a dark spot on the picture where mine has a hole, might be a slight variation in the tray builds.

When I had mine (launch batch) it would constantly spin-up to a ridiculously loud whooshing sound, and wouldn't stop until you went back to the dashboard.

Obviously, it was the DVD player that was used in the original batches but even so it was no where near silent even when you were sat on the dash doing nothing.
