360 freezing with artifacts...is it a goner?

Every time I turn on the 360 now I get a feeling I will get a freeze and it always turns out to be the case. I've been playing Vegas 2 and if I manage to get to the game it makes a scratching sound through the speakers and adds lovely white blocks/artifacts from top to bottom down the screen.

I thought it might initially be some sort of problem with my disc but it has now done it in the dashboard before I've even done anything and seems to be doing it within 5 minutes of turning it on even after it being off all night.

I bought it in May 2006 and have not changed it's whereabouts at all. Plenty of room for cooling and I've always ran it horizontally so I have a bad feeling. I couldn't really find a solution anywhere so I thought I would ask here.

To make it worse I don't get three red sectors of the circle (I don't get any) it just simply freezes up. The PSU stays green too and that is ventilated fine.
 
To add, if it comes to it I might have to get a 360 Elite as a replacement and it looks as though that doesn't come with the transfer kit. Does anyone know if it does come with one now or if not how I would get one?

I imagine you could use the 20GB on the Elite as well if need be?
 
Sounds like it's on it's way out to me.

Not been able to try with other games yet but as I say it does it in the dashboard too now. Massive bugger as there is no RROD yet.

As I say I was thinking about an Elite but then it crossed my mind that I could get a 360 Arcade and attach the hard drive and use everything else from this one and switch straight over? There is no loss of functionality with an Arcade is there? I can't see anywhere which shows it is cut down in any way. Might also be beneficial as it would be a cooler version.
 
Keep trying to use it, it almost certainly will give you 3 red lights eventually. Don't do the stupid towel trick to try to force it, it'll just happen on its own eventually - it's exactly what happened to my launch 360 a few months after I got it.
 
Mine was doing the same a week ago, then it eventually gave the RROD, i have since opened the unit, cleaned off the badly applied thermal paste, added some good AS3 and rebuilt, so far so good, no more freezing :)
 
I think i'll keep trying it then until I get the RROD to be eligible. I play it a lot though so I'm tempted to buy another and sell that one when it is returned.
 
Well it's started doing it now. It freezes with artifacts fairly frequently. I'm a little worried though because only some of the time when you turn it off then on again do the 3 red lights show on the front. Sometimes you can restart and it is still fine but again shows artifacts and freezes.

I would say it happens about 30% of the time but it's obviously screwed so I will be sending it off.

A couple of questions now for the people that have been in this situation -

1) Would you buy another console if you use it every day or wait for it to be returned?
2) If 1 is yes, would you buy an Elite or an Arcade pack in it's place?
3) If 2 is Elite, does anyone know if you can temporarily use the 20GB drive removed from this Premium with the Elite? :)
 
I'd send the console off, get an elite, then sell the console which MS return, and split the difference.

Yes you can use the hdd from the premium.. np..
 
Thanks boys, I went with an Elite today. Using the 20GB premium drive temporarily until I can get a free transfer cable and then I'll pop the premium up for sale. Probably be more reliable once it's come back :)
