360 games on demand

Digital distribution is the way forward, the PC crew will have you believe it’s the reason no one sells PC games instore anymore, truthfully its all about demographics and the core audiences.

Many younger console gamers go into town with their parents and spend their pocket money on a game, the shelves are stuffed with new, second hand and old games ranging from a fiver right up to £50 for some of the collectable editions.

Its this very reason digital distribution has moved so far forward in the PC market, simply as this leaves little room for PC gamers and their games on store shelves. Steam on the PC is a fantastic digital platform, but some of the prices are just downright daylight robbery. But its quickly becoming the only way to obtain some titles, F1 2010 is such a title.

Digital distribution for consoles is still a long way off being viable, stores are still beaming with titles for console owners. Many at good prices as well considering they are on the high street. The indi games such as PSN or live arcade games are selling well online, as they are mostly less then a tenner, so there is a future for digital download, another consideration is that trading digital games isn’t possible so that future is a long way off, but it will eventually happen.

Prices are higher as I suspect they just aren’t trying to compete at the moment, and the games they do sell are from those who can’t be no longer bothered with physical media.

When next gen comes along again, we’ll see a shift in how you obtain your games. Just at the moment the second hand market, stores and consumers of console products aren’t ready to buy the latest blockbuster via digital means… IMO.
