"Microsoft announced the Blu-Ray peripheral will connect to the Xbox 360 using one of the system's USB ports. Moore once again confirmed that the Blu Ray add-on for the Xbox 360 is only for watching movies, and there are currently no plans to use it for games, nor are there plans to release an Xbox 360 with an internal Blu Ray drive."

Thats one less incentive to buy a ps3 I guess, on the other hand shows blu-ray is becomming more popular.

This is BS, Microsoft support the HD format and nothing else.

I did think that, would find it surprising and laughable if they suddenly decided to jump aboard the BD ship after declaring their HD-DVD support.

Edit - yeah dated article looks a tad suss :o

Microsoft Admits Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Support Possible

Microsoft Admits Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Support Possible Although the eventuality has been hinted at before, Xbox UK head Neil Thompson has stated again that if the Blu-ray format becomes significantly more successful than the HD-DVD format then the company will support it with the Xbox 360.

Speaking to the BBC, Thompson is quoted as saying: “Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution. The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice."

Microsoft is known to greatly favor the HD-DVD format, although most assume that an unwillingness to support a Sony-sponsored format has played a significant part in this decision. As such, the Xbox 360’s HD-DVD drive has become the cheapest way to obtain a HD-DVD movie player.

Microsoft has always denied plans to release games on the HD-DVD format and this would presumably also follow for any potential Blu-ray drive. Recent data has suggested that cumulative sales of Blu-ray discs have surpassed those for HD-DVD for the first time, with Blu-ray outselling the HD-DVD format discs by a margin of more than 2-to-1.

They have announced this before that they'll be willing to make a blu ray drive if it is significantly more popular, though currently it isn't.

Sweet, I think this is a good thing, it looks like blu-ray is going to be the dominating HD format why not support it, I'd rather buy a cheap blu-ray add on than a more expensive standalone player.
Nobody can say one is dominating the other at this early stage, whoever does currently is blowing hot air. Essentially, it's the movie studio's that are going to decide and now that the porn industry has chosen hd-dvd that a very big portion of the market. They did afterall influence the betamax/vhs battle.

fair point but just my opinion thats all, I do feel Sony owning movie studios themselfs have an upper hand, in all of these kinds of topics we all blow hot air, it's just conjecture at the end of the day and wether or not I can base my opinion in facts or not I personaly beleive blu-ray will win it out in the end, I could be wrong and if I am it's not the end of the world, I certainly don't see M$ supporting Blu-Ray as a bad thing though.

i laugh at the HD-DVD sales, like for example this article that states US has consumed 100,000 units excluding PC drives or the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive from Microsoft and then boosts about sales with comments like The Group say these figures clearly put it ahead of of any other high definition format according to the group when in real terms clearly isn't taking into account the sales of Sony's PS3 console.

the only real thing going for it atm is the fairly cheapness of the price of the hd-dvd players compared to Blu-Ray ones, but this won't be forever

I doubt they're too bothered, probably more interested in electronic delivery tbh.
They invested a lot of money into it just to decide, meh it's not working for us.

Well they would hurt themselves in the long run if they do not adapt to what seems to be succeeding at establishing the standard format.
