360 Hard drive question

If you add a 320gb HD to a 4gb console does the OS still run off the flash memory or the hard drive?

And i've been told that there's no performance difference between flash ram and the hard drive. Is this true, surely the flash ram would be faster for the OS?

ahh ok. what about data, image cache, ect for games you have installed. will that be on flash or hd? and can that make things run a bit smoother?
