I'm running my 360 through a VGA cable to my AL1916w but i'm in two minds what my next move is.

Either buy a new 22" TFT, or buy a 32" HDTV (probably the snazzy Sammy for £585)

But i'm just wondering which cable is best to connect the 360 with?

The cable that comes with the 360 is component right? (correct me if am wrong) is that the best and only way to get your 360 into your HDTV?

Could i use my VGA cable (as some HDTV's allow this input) and would it be better than using the standard cable?

Also i heard xbox are releasing a HDMI cable for the 360, is this true, if so is it out and will it be the best connection?

One final thing that totally throws me is all the 720p, 1080i & 1080P, what does all that mean? Whats the difference between i & p?

At current, Microsoft are not releasing a HDMI cable, so for High Definition, you either need to use the supplied component cable or the VGA cable. I personally have found component to be a lot richer in colour on our HDTV, and VGA a little sharper, but the colours not brilliant, however this varys from TV to TV from what people seem to say on here. All HDTVs have a component input one way or another, most, if not all have VGA. For the 360, HDMI connections on TVs isn't going to be useful as the 360 currently only outputs in analogue signals, and HDMI is a digital input/output, so you can't just connect up like that.

The " i " and the " p " in HD terms are to say if the signal is interlaced or progressive. See Wiki here for some details on the difference between the two:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_scan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlace
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720p
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080i
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p

The numbers are height of the resolution of the picture, so 720 = 1280x720, and 1080 = 1920x1080. All (well the majority) of Xbox 360 games are rendered in 720p and the up or downscaled accordingly depending on what setting your TV is at.

p, or progressive is the preferred type of output you want for games really, interlaced is more suited to slow and still images, progressive for faster moving things.

You could use VGA or the component. I find VGA crisper but less vibrant than component, personally i prefer component. As for HDMI, they could release one but god knows when.

720p = 1280x720 resolution, progressive scan
1080i = 1920x1080 resolution, interlaced
1080p = 1920x1080 resolution, progressive.
