My headset that I got with the console has broken.

Do you have to use 'official' headsets or can you use and ol' headset with a 2.5mm jack?

You can use any I think aslong as it fits, but I think it has to be mono and not stereo.

I'm not 100% sure so I could be wrong, but that is what I was told when looking into a different headset.

Out of curiosity which version of the MS headset do you have? My first box (release) had headset with the volume control at the base of the pad, this and quite afew of my friends have died. My current box has an in-line control for the volume and I dont know if its just me but sounds better.

I'm thinking of getting a wireless headset, as I'm sick of the wire pulling out when it gets caught on something or other

Its an original version one that's died, with the big connector block at the controller. The speaker still works but not the mic

A word of warning with the wireless headset. It doesnt sync with the first controllers that were included with the consoles at the time of launch. So depending on when you got your console and whether you have an extra controller, it might not work.

Same happened to mine, couldnt work out why as when I opened it up everything was intact. Must be a fairly common problem for them to have designed the newer version.

wow, that's crazy that they don't make that kind of thing obvious in the product description... think we _should_ be ok though as we only got our xbox in January :)

Youll be fine then if you go the wireless route, I wouldnt bother personally Id just get a replacement of the one you have. If you ring Microsoft up they will replace it free of charge, they did with me when mine broke. They did get me to test the online connectivity to ensure my headset was broken mind!

The wireless sync issue was fixed it was to do with the wireless headset itself which MS sorted with a new revision.

The wireless headset is really good compared to the wired one sound and build quality wise but the battery life is very poor.
