Just started playing the x-box tonight and noticed a black line streaming across the screen. Is this an early indication its likely to die on me?

I do hope not, its not even 6-months old yet!

Taking the XBOX out of the box and plugging it in is an early indication its going to die! And it doesn't matter how old it is. My first one died after five months and that started with graphical glitches. Just take it back to the shop you bought it from and get a replacement one. Build quality aside it IS a great console.
