how to get your xbox 360 to find videos on an external hard drive
Done it!
I followed your tips, but it was something else that fixed the problem.
- The location tab in properties for my video and my music folders is the key!
It was confusing and involved a number of restarts of both console and PC, but it was to do with first of all going into my documents, then right clicking on my videos and going to the 'location' tab - and setting it to the video folder on my external hard drive.
I still didn't have my video folder being shared successfully, but noticed my public video folder which had the windows Vista sample videos of a bear hunting fish and some flowers was being shared.
So I then went into c:\Users and found the shared videos folder, then right clicked on it and also set the location to my hard drive's video folder.
It all got messed up and wouldn't even open the folder, but after playing around and restarting both my PC and XBox, suddenly my XBox found all my videos.
I did the same with my music folder too - and now when I go into the XBox console I have all my videos and music available.
Hope this helps someone else at some point.
Now I just need to experiment with whether this supports a 5.1 output!
