360 on HDMI, how to get sound out to a stereo?

You can use an old type cable plugged in as well, then use the RCA's from that. You will have to take the plastic casing of the lead though, or buy an official MS one.

if your monitor has an audio out you could go that way and buy the relevent cheap leads, if it doesn't then I think your going to have to fork out for an official 360 hdmi cable, as that comes with an additional Digital Optical Adapter cable that you can hook up to a stereo/speakers.

HDMI I will be using is a generic one, monitor has no sound o/p plug and none of my equipment is optical.. :(

Katoom, I have on order an official Cv202 VGA HD AV Cable....... this has the 2 RCA plugs......can I just plug this it (while video goes out on HDMI) and use that for the sound then? Was concerned that having the VGA lead in would either mess up HDMI output in some way, or that the sound would be muted on the RCA's as I am using HDMI?

Didn't you get the A/V cable with the XBOX, the one with the red, white and yellow leads? I would try that first.
If you are getting the VGA cable, could you just use that instead of the HDMI.

I use the VGA with my monitor, works perfectly. Some of the cheaper make cables can give a washed out picture, but you'll be fine with the MS one.

VGA lead works well into monitor, though the only problem is that most monitors are 16:10 aspect ratio, so for my native res of 1680*1050 I get a dirty great 2.5 inch black bar at the bottom of the picture. It used to be a small black bar at the top and bottom of the screen, then it just changed one day and now just a larger black bar at the bottom of the screen,
Does anyone else get this?

What is the best way to get sound to a stereo/ amp or whatever, if I am using the HDMI lead from 360 to the monitor?

Thanks in advance.:)

Hmm with my 360 i got a block that plugs in next to the HDMI cable, it allows you to connect to a stereo/amp via audio cables.

Thats what i do :)

Got a pic of that connector Trox? :)

As for black borders, the 24" LCD I have ordered is 16:9.....so native res is 1920x1080. So no black borders.;)

It's a peripheral that you can only get with either an 360 elite or with the official Microsoft HDMI cable. Regularly see people selling them on ebay though and I got one myself for £10 a week ago from there.

I use a red, green, blue cable and then on that it also has the red, yellow, white. So i just split them off to the stero?

Is there any advantage to using HDMI?

I have one of the cable spare you see :)

You might get a better picture with HDMI, it depends on the TV.
VGA and HDMI will up scale films to 1080p, component will go to 1080i.

And yes you could just split the red/white off to a stereo.

On my brothers 360, he wanted to use the HDMI and the optical to an amp, but the two cables wont fit in together. You have to buy an official MS one.
So i just took off the plastic casing around the A/V lead so they both fit, doesn't look pretty but it works.

To the OP. I'm not sure if you will get the sound out of the red/white RCA's when using the HDMI, but if you have the A/V lead, you could try it before spending money on an official one.

I think it's fair to say that HDMI for video is the way to go..

Then use the original AV Lead that came with the 360, you will need to either remove the case from the connector, or 'shave' it down.. this will plug in 'with' the HDMI lead, but you will only use the red/white leads for audio.. this does work!
