Had this Elite about 3 months now, it's always stayed in the same position, never moved it since I bought it.

I tried the COD5 beta last week and after I'd finished playing I went to play FIFA 09 which was in the drive, only on the dashboard it said "Open Tray" instead of displaying the game name. So I put the disc back in and the same thing happened, the 360 wasn't recognising any games I put in.

After numerous restarts it worked, only for it to happen this morning too..

So I guess the laser is knackered?

These things are really built like ****. What a bloody carry on.

EDIT: Now working but it isn't filling me with hope for the future..

Probably the laser yeah. To be fair, laser issues can crop up with any machine, not just 360s. At least it's not 3 red lights :)

Your drive is shagged, it's a matter of time now before it gives up. They hopefully will last a bit longer once you can install and the drive doesn't have to do as much work.

The drives are very fragile, I remember going through a whole game swapping saga with gears 1 only to find it was my drive throwing up the error.

You didn't mention it, but I was going to say, if it is vertical, move it horizontally. If it's only 3 months old it's easily covered for a swap at he retailer for a new one. I would swap it out now, rather than let the problem fester, don't forget MS only support RROD for 3 years, not laser failures so if you leave it you may end up not being covered. Laser and drive reading failures are probably not that more uncommon than RROD tbh.

I'm wondering if my 3 month old Elite is going up the spout, too. The last two games I've had from Lovefilm, Saints Row 2 and Pure, both crashed upon the "loading" screen and wouldn't go any further no matter how many times I switched off and restarted. I thought it might be an issue with new dual-layered discs? Gears of War, GRAW2, Halo 3 all work fine.

It's horizontal

I got the Elite as part of a phone contract so I presume any problems they'll expect me to go through Microsoft so not sure what I should do.

My drive has started to throw out 'disk unreadable' errors quite frequently now. Most annoying in Fable 2. :(

It also had a one-of RROD but been fine since. Its over a year old so the drive cant be replaced, but could i hand it in as a speculative RROD failure as it seems to be on the way? Or does it have to be properly done over to get fixed?
