Anyone know of a third party 360 pad with a better d-pad than the official one? The official controller d-pad is just disgracefully bad, I literally can't believe it made it to retail.

I think its pretty well built, i cant believe you want something none xbox.

The d-pad has always been pants even since the original Xbox, pretty well known fact :p

Can't help you with regards to third party controllers though I'm afraid.

The pad as a whole is, the d pad itself though is awful, the worst I've ever used on an official controller.

I have a Mad Catz pad which has a slightly better d pad, but still not great. There's much less of the 'press left, pad thinks you pressed up' problem though.

as already said d-pad is terrible, try playing the last level of the Simpsons Game with it  I ended up using the Media Remote :)
Mad Catz is really your only other option.

i know what you mean, when you put the 360's d-pad next to the dualshock/sixaxis, its an unbelivably cheap and nasty looking part

you obviously not used it to play Street Fighter 2 on it, took LOADS of goes to get off a dragon punch ! Even a Hindokan took more goes than you think.

it doesn't give a better click but I never get mis-clicks anymore. Also it feels more like an old school joystick once modded which makes SFII a blast to play.

thats interesting. does it give it a more positive click? might take a file to my pads if thats the case:)

AFAIK not exactly, it just seats the "hat" better - but if you take too much off it will make it sloppy and worse.
Walkthrough of how to do it properly in the link I provided earlier (quoted below for ease ;))
You could try the mod on the original http://www.ufighterx.com/guides/videogame/360dpadfix/360dpadfix.htm just don't take too much off, less is best.
Some have done it without taking the controller apart but I think thats risky and you'd no doubt get plastic swarf inside :(
