Ok I hope some of you can help me. I recently purchased a HDTV and have my PC & XBox360 connected to it.

What I need is an understanding what I can do with the Xbox360 other than gaming?

I've shifted through the various media functions on the display but really don't understand what they could offer me and how they would work :-/
Is it a benefit/requirement to have the PC communicating with the 360? also I noticed some mention of connecting an Ipod, is this possible? and if so what bennefit can it offer?

Also what more can the PS3 offer? (apart from Blue-Ray)

P.S. I don't mind buying any neccessary hardware software to offer some of the features.

I don't know if it will make any difference but I use X64?

Cheers

On the 360 you can stream from a Windows XP machine: (Look Here )

1. Music
2. Pictures
3. WMV movies/files

You can also play music on your ipod on your 360 via the Ipod download on marketplace.

If you have Media Center, then the 360 becomes a Media Extender but with limited codec support. You can basically do the above, but with a nicer menu and few other features as well.

I think Vista will offer either the same or more than Media Center.

I haven't got a clue about the PS3, but I hope that it supports video codecs like Divx. That would stir things up a bit.

Xbox 360, allows you to play wmv files, so hd wmv files look great on it and process it better than my pc. Plugging an ipod into the xbox works as a usb hard drive, allowing game saves downloads and to play your music through your xbox while in game.

Use Transcode 360 on top for avi support :) dunno if thats allowed to be said here sorry if it's not !

Sorry to hijack the thread but its better than starting a new one on a similar topic, when I install windows media connect, it gets to the point where it tries to authorize the xbox but it fails. Does anyone know why? Or have a solution?

iirc you ask the 360 to connect to the pc and it should give you an 8 digit auth code to type into the pc

If you use WMP11 there is no need to download/install windows media connect, just enable 'media sharing' in WMP11, very simple - had it working in 30 seconds!

EDIT: just noticed you use x64, is WMP11 available for that? not sure myself!
EDIT2: yes, it is microsoft download link

But his PC is already connected to his HD-TV...So i can't see how this would bennefit him.As his PC would have much better support for different movie formats...

I'm just saying what it can do.

It's up to him if he wants to use his PC or the 360 on it.

ask yourself what is the purpose of a console - to play games period. If you want all that extra flumph just get a new pc.
