360 PSU question...can someone shed some light?

Hi,

Am I right in thinking that the newer 360’s have a new, less powerful PSU? And that the old PSU’s still work on the new 360’s?

Reason I’m asking is that my launch 360 is in for it’s first repair after just over 2 years (not bad eh!?) and I’m concerned in case it can’t be repaired and they send me one of the newer consoles as a replacement.

I need to know if my old PSU will work with the newer 360’s (I’ve read elsewhere that the new PSU’s, understandably, don’t work on the older 360’s).

I know, I’m sad…but I worry about these kind of things! I don’t want to get my 360 back in a couple of weeks and be unable to use it because of the PSU.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can stop me worrying!

I think you can safely bet that 'something' will be replaced - thats even if you get your own console back!

As for the PSU, I've not heard of any issues like you mention - but I know we can say that MS are getting better at their whole returns policy...

I waited about 5 days for my 'repaired', by which I mean replacement console but it was spot on...

I'm sure someone will be along with a better answer in a bit... :)

new psu does not work with old console and vice versa

That can't be true as far as using the 203watt (old) with a new console(lower power) - because we are running our new elite that came with a 175 with our old premium psu.

So old psu will power a newer console.

EDIT: I might have the figures wrong, but the principle is there.

The plugs are different...

There is some plastic lock in the middle of the plug, you cant plug a 175w power supply into a 203w xbox360.

BTW the 175w plug, is all plastic..

Apart from the contact pins i guess :P

But the new power supply not fitting into old xboxes is hardly and issue if they wont work and potentially could damage them, win win situation and i suspect the same thing will happen on later xboxes with different power requirements unless they ever get the blasted power supply inside the main part.

cool....so at least it would work if, in a sudden fit of generosity, MS send me a newer console to replace my premium which is currently at the xbox hospital.

no matter what power the xbox is rated at any off the psu's will work aslong as it can be connected, the main thing is that the psu can suppply enough wattage to the xbox, suppose it is a bit like a pc psu.
(like has been said, aslong as it is not the other way round when a lower rated psu is trying to supply more watts than it is capable of)

Wrong, old PSU works fine with newer consoles, why on Earth wouldn't it?

Yep, I use my old 203w PSU with my 65nm Elite as I found the 175w PSU that came with it was stupidly loud (faulty maybe?)

175w doesn't work with old 90nm consoles though, connection is slightly different so it won't fit.
