360 Saying open tray when disk in

When games are inserted it reads, then says open tray. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong, and anyway to fix it? Its out of warranty.
 
Does it actually display the name of the game or do you just hear it trying to read? Do DVD movies work?
 
Over time the laser get weak, you have 2 choices, buy a new drive, or open it up and turn the potentiometer down a bit so the laser gets more voltage.
 
Can't hear what he's saying due to no sound, is he talking about the travel of the laser module?
 
my thoughts too, but if it did it once, my logic is it would keep doing it and become a PITA. I know my way around one, so it could be worth a punt.
 
I used to get this message as well, the 360 read everything no problem then one day started coming up with the Open Tray message with a disc in that previously worked fine, and would do it with all discs including dvds.

The drive would try to pick the disc up and spin it, but would fail each time with a kind of whirring clicking noise.

This is going to sound ridiculous but I used a piece of card to adjust something in the disc drive without taking the thing apart- at work but will post link later.

It worked for me, havent had any issues since, of course if its still in warranty etc then you may be slightly reluctant to try it, although its veeery simple to do, must be nearly a year since i had to do it and its been fine since.
 
i had this was driving me nuts so bought a benq drive of the bay and swapped the laser out of it with the one in my console (liteon)

problem solved
