The VGA port on you're laptop is 99.99% a VGA out. You can't connect your Xbox like that.

in a nutshell, it's not possible. the vga port on your laptop is an output so you can display the contents of it's screen on an external monitor and/or extend the laptop screen onto the monitor. you cannot achieve what you want to do.

I wonder if it is possible to buy a video capture device that accepts a video in (the red white and yellow plugs). Might that work?

Don't buy it on my says so though as I am just guessing mate!!!

i suppose it would, but still defeats the point, it would cost around £20-30 for a device, and its only going to be standard def. Buying a 19" widescreen cheap is a good solution i think, plus you get hi-def gaming :)

looks like im in luck, i happen to of bought a capture card a few months ago which was of no use.
