Hi folks,

I want to run my box 360 on my 24" Dell display. Problem being the lack of sound. I have an X-Fi FPS with the front panel. I would like to connect my 360 to it so I can use my 5.1 surround sound speakers.

Is it possible to use a toslink, if so how would I go about it. Sorry but I'm not too clued up on this type of thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Cheers for the reply mate. What is the maximum resolution supported with the VGA cable? How much better is the quality over the component connector via a monitor? as it look spretty bobbins on my Dell via component.

You can just use your component cable as that also has optical out.

Basically you just have to get an optical cable and connect it between the 360 and front panel then get the X-Fi to decode the Dolby Digital input...easier said than done though, in theory it should work but I haven't read of anyone actually getting it to work yet :(

Hmm yeah, I have tried via the front panel, with no joy I got a nice humming static sound...I know the Toslink is fine. Though a wee bit old. I used it with my Audigy 2 Platinum decoder box with my old Xbox. I was just wondering if there was something I was missing. Is the VGA quality any better than the component? I presume you can adjust the Resolution as it is pretty bobbins via component on my monitor.
cheers

If component looks good on your monitor I don't think you're going to get any real improvement by using VGA...some say VGA is better, others Component (usually depends on monitor), but either way I don't think it's meant to be £15-£20 worth of difference.

Na it kinda sux by component to be honest.....I would have thought if it is running in VGA then you can adjust the res? or can you do that via Component anyway....? It think due to my monitor not running at it's native resolution of 1920x1200 it is scaling the image which in turn makes it quite poor quality. :/ Yeah I don't really want to be spending 20 quid if it ain't going to make squat difference. I will be getting a nice HD TV but not for a while yet.

I find the quality at 1080i component on my Dell 24" very good. You've not got it set to something daft like 480p or 576i or something?

Hmm I don't think so......maybe I was expecting it to be better.
After seeing GRAW on my mates 50" HDTV I was expecting
similar definition. It is defo set on 1080i. when I play fifa 2007 the players look, ......fuzzy.....not sharp and defined. As I say I reckon this might be down to me used to seeing my Monitor playing PC games at 1920x1200. I would say it looks better than the CRT TV I use.

I find quality on a 2405 over VGA is better than component. The image is sharper and clearer, none of that fuzziness you're seeing over component.

I thought the component was abysmal on my Dell 2407, bought a VGA cable and it now looks fantastic.

As for the sound I would have thought you'd just plug in the toslink cable, there's probably some setting on the xbox or soundcard that need's to be changed.

Just out of interest...did you buy an official VGA lead? Wondering if it is worth spending an extra £10 just to get an official one. I cant see it making any difference....would it?

I have heard the official one is better than the alternatives - I haven't seen it first hand though as I just bought the official one (looks great).
