360 wireless receiver problem

I was wondering if anyone had came across a similar problem with the 360 wireless receiver. Basically it connects the controller to the PC fine and I can use it for as long as I want in the game, but when I exit out of the game all of my other game controllers are missing (including the 360 pad) and my sound doesn't work until I restart my machine. Once my machine restarts all my devices are visible in game controllers again and my sound is back (wheel, joystick etc,) It's doing my head in

I've tried reinstalling directx and the xbox pad drivers but still no joy.

Im not using the windows update drivers for the pad so and I havent updated xp in ages so I'll try that, I also havent tried the chipset drivers so that'll I'll give that a go as well. I did try disconnecting the battery before exiting out of the game but that didn't help either. Thanks for the help.
