Im asking for a friend, is it possible to plug a standard usb wifi dongle into the 360 and have it connect over a wireless network or do u need to fork out for the official xbox wireless kit thing?

Official if u want USB. Thats not to say the ethernet port won't work with any standard networking kit...

yeah hes setup using ethernet for now but i thought it might be possible to do that for wireless but i guessed wrong i guess!?

I think Boogle is right, if you want to use a USB wireless dongle, then only the official one will work, but you can get a normal wireless thing with ethernet connection, and it will work fine, and potentially quite a bit cheaper.

You can either use the official wireless adapter, or a wireless bridge (connects wireless to standard ethernet).

The official adapter is officially endorsed by MS, and clips on to the back of the console. The wireless bridge will be cheaper, but won't clip directly on to the console.

I tried a usb drive, it will not work (maybe driver support in the future?)

But a wireless bridge could have the option of being moved around for better reception, ie to get away from interference.
