360 WLAN with Wireless Access point/bridge

Hi,

I've not got my 360 just yet, but I'm wondering if it's possible to connect the 360 via a Wireless Accesspoint + ethernet, rather than buying the official dongle?

I think it would work out a bit cheaper, as the cheapest I can get an official dongle is about £45.

Thanks

Nope not possible.

Theres a few cards IIRC that are specifically designed to work with the 360, but they are only a few quid cheaper than the official card.

Just to confirm - I'm not taking about another USB dongle for the 360. It would be a seperate wireless bridge that connects to the existing WiFi network, and the 360 would connect to it via Ethernet.

I know what you mean, im pretty much 100% they dont work. Hang back and wait for someone else to confirm first though before taking my word.

I tried doing this, it didnt work right away so i put it on the back burner and havnt touched it since (Im lazy).
I think it was messing up because the 360 from behind the bridge was on a different network to the router so I couldnt set up port forwarding properly

hmm ok then thanks, I assumed it should work as the WiFi link should be transparant to the 360.

I might pick one up anyway and have a play, can always eBay the bridge if I can't get it to work.

it can be done but it requires a lot of messing around
the wireless bridge is the best bet for plug and play

i use a cable now since i got my own place

the official adapter is expensive but it just works and i guess that is where you see the benefits

edit* i would say just go with the bridge straigt away if you must

its no different to using a cable really

Update for you, I picked up one of these for £35. Works a treat, took about 5 mins to setup, didn't need to touch a thing on the 360 - it just treats it as a wired connection.

It was probably quicker than setting up the official one, as I could just copy and paste my WEP key into the web interface, rather than mess about on the 360 :)

Ah I was going to make a thread similar to this, so excuse me if I partially highjack it...

I've been looking at getting a 360, but instead of buying the wifi dongle thing, is it possible to share the internet connection through my PC? (Which recieves it through a wireless card).

Excuse my ignorance, but I know sod all about networking...

Gutted, I hunted around on the bay for a while and couldn't see anything half decent for less than ~£25

It's some crap no name brand thing and it only travels between1 floor (other connection is directly below the 360). But it works perfectly, 3ms RTT between a PC connected to the bridge and the router.

Yep, works perfectly.
