How do these two CPU's compare in general usage and gaming? Will I notice any difference?
I have a vega 56 all on a custom loop, but may change this at some point.

General usage: 3600 is better
gaming: 10600k is better (+ a lot better /w overclock)

However given the 10600k is about £80-100 more and needs a cpu cooler and on top of that needs a more expensive z490/b460 motherboard, its not worth potentially £150-200 more cost, when you can make that saving and put it towards a better gpu/elsewhere.

Unless you're getting a 2080TI and game at 1080P you're not going to see a difference. Save the £100 and get a better GPU, or a new NVMe drive...........

Okay, thanks for the advice, just had the upgrade bug, Intel seems to hold its price a lot better so figured it would be better. worth an ask hey:)

Taking you already have an AM4 setup, just dropping in a 3600 will be the cheaper less hassle solution and will give you great gaming performance.

I already have the 3600. Just trying to convince my self to go intel as I thought it was meant to be better

Is it not just a rehashed 8700k 6 core 12 threads with a slight bump? I mean theres barely anything in it... stick with your 3600, you are literally wasting money if you swap.

Well, it is better in games, by a whole 7%, if you're running a 2080TI and game at 1080P.

If you have an itch you need to scratch at least wait for Zen 3, they look to be 20% better again.

It does look like a big 7% lol
I only have to convince myself

10600k if gaming but if they did not require buying a new motherboard like the z490 and could be used on the z390 then no go with AMD or if you still want Intel go for a 9700k and a z390 the 9700k can be picked up for decent price now S/H.

I went 10600K. Already had a cooler which fitted, its the same as previous gen intel sockets. The guys are right, it is more expensive, but I'm outperforming my friends 9900K with a 4.8GHz overclock. I use my machine mainly for gaming.

That will slowly become less true as people accept Ryzen is significantly better value or move over to AMD. (unless AMD do an Intel ofc) The 2nd market is propped up by people not wanting to switch motherboards for whatever reason and dare i say, fanboys.

I doubt Cometlake will have the same money return in 4yrs as Skylake does now.

Intel second hand market is also propped up by Intels refusal to drop prices on legacy chips. Problem with AMD is that they do drop prices so second-hand market also takes a dive.

If money is burning a hole in your pocket, I suggest you wait a few months and go Ryzen 4600 or 4700. Only need to swop out cpu then and they will easily match or beat the intel I recon.

I agree that it's best now to hang tight but he's got a X370 so last time I checked he won't be swapping out any CPU and will need a new motherboard as well.
