Hi there, ever since the AMD presentation I have been racking my brains about my next upgrade.

I currently have a 4690k.

I want to upgrade, I only game on my PC, at 4k/60hz & 1080p/144hz.

The 3600 can be had for £179 and the 5600x is £289.99.

The 5600x is 62% more expensive for what is probably around 20% increase in gaming performance.

Now my brain is saying that the 3600 is by far the better value CPU, which could be had even cheaper with sales this week. And perhaps when the 5600x is released. That's a no brainer.

But the 5600x is newer tech, will be 20% faster, perhaps even more as time goes on. I do upgrade every 5-6 years on average. So £100 over 5 years is only £20 per year more if you work it out like that.

I just need some advice on what you guys would do in my situation.

I don't want to buy something then regret it later on!

Lots of good responses here!

Well someone posted a link to an article about AMD releasing a 5600 in January for $220? if that is true then that makes everything easier. I really hope it's true.

I currently have a 2080, so plenty of GPU power for my needs, but definitely limited by my 4690k.

As some of you have said the logical thing to do would be wait for benchmarks then assess the difference. Realistically any of the new CPU's will be a massive upgrade.

But then there's always the temptation of going for that new fast product, damn this PC hobby :D

I'm sure, but the op says he games at 4K :).

Yeah it's a 50/50 split at the moment (going through a bunch of games on game pass).

I do turn a few settings however when playing at 4k to get 60fps solid, I can't tell the difference between some settings and yet it reduces the GPU load a lot.

Pretty much expecting it to be around the same performance, win a few and loose a few overall tbh with slightly more on the win side.

Ah right, that changes things then doesn't it.

Beat.
Single core ipc counts for a lot of games and then processor speed which is why the 12 and 16 cores runs higher mhz speeds have an advantage.
However your likely able to pbo2, cool the 5600x and have the best price/performance cpu in the world and the fastest for your gaming rig.
I dont need 12 or 16 cores for my needs and can oc the difference in mhz speeds with amd pbo2 and cooling.

See now that makes a strong argument for the 5600x. £290 CPU beating a £500 CPU at gaming (10900k) while keeping close to the 12/16 core Ryzen 9 CPU's.

If clock for clock the 5600x is 19% faster than a 3600, then add in the mhz boost, it's probably closer to 25% faster than a 3600 at full speed.

Then as you say, get a half decent cooler and motherboard with good VRM's and you've got a pretty great performing PC for the price.

Would a cooler like - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cooler-master-hyper-212-black-edition-cpu-cooler-120mm-hs-081-cm.html

Be sufficient enough for a 5600x & decent boost speeds?

Can't help thinking used 3000 CPUs are going to be excellent value next week - sure 10-20% slower, but a 3700X for something like £160 compared to a 5800X at £420? For the vast majority of the time, you're not even going to notice the difference in regular use/gaming. A used 3700X is also significantly cheaper than the 5600X and looking at the early/leaked benchmarks, I think the 3700X will edge out the 5600X in multicore workloads.

You really think the 3700x will drop to £160? I can't see that happening for a while yet to be honest mate.

My 5600x is arriving today so I made the jump!

They are already selling around that price, next few weeks hundreds could come onto the 2nd hand market.

Ah right you're talking about 2nd hand, not brand new? Yeah possibly. No denying that would be a great value chip for someone who doesn't need top performance. Lots of choices which is good
