Hi I recently just built a pc with this setup:

3700x
Gigabyte Auros mini itx
1660ti gpu

The cpu seems to be overclocked automatically?! Running at 4.1 ghz. I have no intention of overclocking at all- has anyone experienced this?

I can turn it down with the mobo software but then it reverts the next time the computer is started so I assume I will need to change it in the bios.

This is normal default behaviour.
3700x should boost to 4.4GHz under light loads and up to 4.2 GHz for all-core loads.
4.1 is in fact lower than that. Your motherboard may benefit from bios and chipset driver update. AMD optimized clocks better in new versions.

Ah I see. Well the fan just makes a hell of a noise all the time (using a cryorig c7 fan) and it seems to be working hard for doing nothing.
That is how Ryzen 3000 series works. For light loads it pumps in high voltages which causes temps to keep spiking. I would suggest making a custom fan curve which is easy to do and solves the problem.

Ok looks like I have some work to do!

It’s just a bit alarming for it to suddenly start making a bunch of noise and the cpu working hard when it’s not under any strain at all.

Update drivers, get Ryzen Master.

It's not because it is working hard. It is 7nm and the small spikes of high voltage used to boost clocks at low loads cannot dissipate the heat quick enough. Not tried the ryzen profile myself so maybe that fixes the problem. I use Windows high performance profile together with a custom fan profile and don't get the fan making noise.

Let us know if the ryzen balanced profile works out for you.

So the Ryzen Balanced power plan seems to be better, and I made a custom fan curve so its not unnecessarily revving out. Still slightly louder/whinier than I would want but maybe that's the trade off for the smaller fan/case build?
Its quite happy playing Hunt, and hopefully just as happy running Photoshop!
Thanks for all the info!
