3700x + stock cooler temp range all over the place

I've just installed a Ryzen 3700x and stock cooler (with their pre-applied paste) and my temps are all over the place..

Idle it is ranging between 33c and 62c. If I stress test it it will shoot up to 70c within a couple of seconds, then steadily rise to 90+ (at which point I stop the test out of fear of overheating.. :)

At idle the cores normally sits around 0.98v with the odd core going up to 1.49 for a second, then back down..

How come the temperature range is so big? In my mind having it at 50c idle sounds a bit high, no?

@alex h : yes correct stock cooler.. I have ordered some thermal paste to try first, if not I might have to buy another cooler - otherwise I would just constantly worry about the temp of the cpu whilst doing the more CUP heavy things. :-D

So it turns out comparing the idle temp is absolutely pointless unless you look at the "processor power management" settings on your machine..

Mine was set to "Ryzen balanced", which defaults to a minimum CPU power of 99%.. Others might theirs set to "Balanced" which has the CPU set to 5%.. (thus dynamically dropping the speed when idle, boosting when required)

Dropping my minimum to 5% allowed me to obtain an idle temp of <40c.. It obviously doesn't change the fact that at 100% (full load) my temps are approaching what I am comfortable with (90+)..

Again, lowering the max CPU to 99% drops the "full load" temp to 80c - but again, the CPU will then run at a maximum of 3.5ghz, which slightly defeats the object of having a CPU that will boost up to 4.X Ghz. :)

For completeness, with Max set to 99% the voltage doesn't go above 1v, where as for 100% it goes up to just shy of 1.5v.. (hence the spike in temperature).

Setting it to min 99/max 100 sees the cores getting anywhere between 1v and 1.5v, hence my big idle temperature range (40-60c)

In terms of Cinebench score 99% vs 100% is 10787 vs 12020.

Im getting some thermal pasta over the weekend so will apply it to see if it improves things.
