3700x vs 5600x

Currently using a 2600 on a B450 MSI pro carbon AC motherboard. Its starting to show its age a bit so thinking of doing a mini CPU upgrade to hold me off until doing a full upgrade with either Zen4 or Zen5.

Will need it for some gaming (mainly play WZ atm) and also general work and stuff as well.

GPU is a 1070, and I have a 1440p 144hz monitor.

On the one hand I feel like I'll end up needing more cores because they get utilized a fair bit, but then the IPC gains of the 5600x make it so I might not need all the cores, as they are better - and most games seem to play better on the 5600x as well, however 3700x I can nab a little cheaper (probably £40 or so cheaper)

Thoughts?

5600X 6 cores pretty much equal 3700X 8 cores in multi core benchmarks thanks to IPC. So if you expect some games will fully utilize capabilities of 3700X, 5600X will still be equal or better.
Its more expensive, but worth it.

But if you are planning to upgrade on Zen4 at end of year, stay on 2600?

Is it really equal in multicore? Damn I didnt know that, thats impressive! I guess 5600x will end up being the choice then for now.

Zen4 I wont be an early adopter (even if it is released this year) so it'll likely be some time in 2022 where I do a full upgrade. I can just sell the 2600, use the money to fund part of the 5600x and then use that for the next 15 months or so which will do me fine.

WZ seems to be very CPU heavy, so my guess is that I see a pretty big improvement there. Unfortunately the video you posted doesnt show any benchmarks for WZ

Yeah I'd say spend the money on a GPU instead but those don't really exist right now.

You can test this by changing warzones res to 1080p and if you don't see an increase in fps from 1440p then you are CPU bound, if fps does go up after changing to 1080p then a new CPU will make little to no difference.

I don't play Warzone so you might be right but I think at 1440p it's the 1070 that's crying out to be upgraded. Wait til the market has died down a bit then upgrade that imo.

Yeah the 1070 definitely needs an upgrade as well, but GPU's are impossible to get at the moment.

And I dont really want to upgrade both CPU and GPU as im just waiting to do that probably next year most likely

Yeah thats the issue with GPU's atm, can't get them anywhere.

I did test this, and the FPS did definitely go up, but not by too much. I feel like a 5600x can definitely give me a big boost in that regard.

Also I like playing on 1440p as it just looks much better imo

I went from a 3600 to 5800X with an RTX 3080 and most games were margin of error at 1440p so in hindsight I probably should have just saved the cash.

Hmm thats interesting, I would have expected more of a jump in all honesty. Maybe ill need to see more benchmarks and tests.. Thanks!

I have 3800x and a 3080 and was so close of getting a 5800x but good thing I didn't. Performance difference is small in 1440p even when comparing it with a 5900x. I bought whiskey instead.

I went from a 3600 to 5800X and I was quite impressed with the improvements. Granted being able to enable SAM will account for some of gains I seen in certain games but I was impressed by the improvement in 1% lows which gives a much smoother experience. Driving around in Cyberpunk for example, I would have got the occasional stutters with the 3600 but with the 5800X these were gone. I also saw a bump of around 5 FPS on average too. Another example was the benchmark in RDR2, it always stuttered at certain parts when turning the city street corners but this gone with 5800X. I'm sure there are many games where the difference will be insignificant but there will be other more CPU heavy games were it won't, I saw a huge improvement of over 25 FPS in the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark for example compared to the 3600.

I once listened to the sensible advice, opting for a i5 6600K instead of the i7 6700K and only lasted 2 months before selling it at £60 loss and buying the 6700K. You have to take into consideration how happy it will make you feel having the better product too sometimes! Not very rational but then PC enthusiasm as a hobby often isn't always very rational I find...

Fair point! The 5600x also seems to be better future proofed as well. I guess I'll try find the 5600x somewhere for a cheaper price

Warzone was tested here and it was a jump from the 2600 to 5600x (like I want) at 1080p, and the difference is huge. Its looking like its around a 60-70% increase in frames!

Not to mention the 1% lows and the 0.1% lows are also much higher as well, so I think its definitely worth the upgrade

Thoose with an overkill 5800x can upgrade to an RTX 4080 in 2022 and possibly an RTX 5080 in 2024.

I doubt a 3600x will handle next gen without bottlenecking. Something to consider when choosing a CPU to match todays GPUs.

I doubt a 3600x will handle next gen without bottlenecking. Something to consider when choosing a CPU to match todays GPUs.

This is only a stopgap measure until I go for a full new build in around 2 years time

Honestly if it was me I would go 3700x or 5800x despite most games using only 6 cores, this is likely to change soon but also having extra cores handling the os tasks which could be many. I have icue, skype, discord etc etc all running without taking precious cpu time away from my gaming.

Good plan. I want to upgrade to the 5600 non X and sell my 3300X.

I find that the 4 cores 8 threads I have just can’t keep up with certain loads.
