Forum members have asked a lot of questions about clocking Ivybridge CPU on air in my section of the forum. In the last couple of hours today I have produced this so you guys can see the voltages I am using in each given area. Many have 1600 mhz RAM so I used 1866 to stress the IMC a touch more. This is not a cherry picked CPU it a retail I used for testing the Corsair RAM and has not been speed binned.

Stability test is Prime Blend for 30 mins Plus.

4.6ghz



4.8ghz



4.9ghz

LLC High, Graphics installed in PCI EX3.0 slot, Cooler Megahelms Black with one golf ball fan, Temps depended on Vcore applied. I was doing this plus other clocking at the same time so only really noted that they where well with acceptable levels,

I held high hopes for this chip at 4.6 but they faded at 4.8!!! lol
 
Did you happen record the max temps it got to for each overclock at all? That'd be useful to see. Great results though, I haven't been able to do anywhere near that low voltage for those overclocks.

You seem to have a few settings there for voltages that I don't. Here is all I see on mine:


This was using the extreme board mate it has a lot more options than all the other boards. I did watch the temps at one stage on each test yeah but I did not note em no. They where ok though, good for air.
 
Fair enough then :) I did notice it was a better mobo.

How much extra difference does having all those settings make? Most people here seem to struggle past 4.6 but you've managed 4.9 out of that one under air! Hope I'm not bothering you with all these questions :P.

No bother at all!!!

They make a difference at the top end of an overclock and to get out of the chip all its capable of. So far I have found the ASUS Maximus V X and F and the Gigabyte UP7 to be the best at extracting everything from a chip on both clocks and memory.
 
Sounds fine, although make sure to stress test with something link LinX or Intel Burn-In as well. Sounds like you got a decent clocker!

8-Pack: Some good info there. However maybe don't use PNG? Some of those images are nearly 3MB each. Just thinking of those on slow connections etc. :)

IBT and Prime are not the best test. Using it is.

83 C is ok with these chips but remember you need to allow afew C for summer when ambient rises.

You sound to be doing well so far though.
 
Hey 8 pack, looking at these overclocks I am well impressed with your results.
I had my system at 4.6ghz for a while, but after gaming for 30 mins on battlefield3 the game crashed. So I had to lower my clock to 4.5ghz and all was ok.

I meant to ask in my previous post. Is it safe to keep voltages at one fixed voltage? or is it better to use offset?

Also, I noticed in my Bios under the voltages, there are the following options.

for 4.5ghz
CPU voltage (offset or manual) + 0.020
DRAM 1.5
VCCSA auto
CPU PLL 1.5
PCH ??????? <<<<<< what is this

I also have the AI Suite software you used to do these clocks with, I think I have most of the options available that is on yours.
Is the AI Suite ok to clock with?

I did not use AI Suite to do the clocking I used Bios. I put AI Suite in the screen shots so forum members could see what voltages I was setting.

I used Fixed Vcore on that clock and I prefer fixed always. Its not more dangerous as you put it at all.

VCCSA always comes in useful when tuning stability.

PCH voltage is the chipset voltage. Leave this on auto unless your having stability issues with multiple devices or graphics.
 
This all depends on the silicon you have in hand as well as other component factors too. The CPU I picked here was a random one from the warehouse. I have had CPU that will do 5ghz at almost stock volts and others that will only do 4.6ghz at 1.35 on high end hardware.
 
I use the same clock speed.

Good silicon is if your CPU or whatever component can go higher and at lower voltage than the rest. e.g 4.6 ghz stable at 1.2 and 5.0ghz at 1.4 compared to one that does 4.8 at 1.35 and is 5ghz incapable.
