3770K can't get over 4.2

Hi,
Bit of an odd one really.

Wanting to get to 4.4 on my 3770K but I think my board is somehow stopping me.

Stuck it to 44 on the multiplier and auto volts and it rebooted 3 runs into Prime with an 80 degrees.

So wanted to reign it in a bit by manually setting voltage, board is a Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H but I can't seem to be able to set a manual 1.2v

When I tried I ran prime and had CPUID open and it only showed 1.17v, would that be why the machine rebooted?

yes, be surprised if u could run a 3770k @ 4.4 and 1.17v

set LLC to high or very high for a start, manual voltage control and start at 1.3v and see if it will boot at that [also prime is a waste of time, did you build your pc to run prime?]

OK, thats a start.
What should I use to test the overclock with? and what temp am I lookin gat to be safe and ensure I'm not destroying the chip? I was aiming for around 70 degrees on my AIO Antec Kuhler.

anything up to 85'c in synth tests is fine, gaming you should be looking at 60 at the highest I think.

for a quick and dirty test I use intel burn test [IBT], I usually see if my oc will pass 10 runs of that and then play a game bf3/4 has been shown to push even IBT stable overclocks over the edge and require more voltage

if you can play your favourite game without a crash, check event viewer once you've finished and look for WHEA errors, these usually mean not enough voltage so bump it up a notch or 2 and see if they go away.

1.3v was just a guess for your cpu every one is different, if will do what you want at that voltage then try dropping it down alittle until you find it crashes out and bump it back up a couple notches.

My 3770k needs:
4.4Ghz = 1.232V
4.5Ghz = 1.280V
4.6Ghz = 1.360V

But I keep it running at 4.4Ghz.

I think a good place to start is manual voltage to 1.3V, set your clock multiplier to 44, after that start dropping the voltage by 0.01V, when your system become unstable just put 0.01V on the top of the last stable voltage and you are done.
