Ok I updated to a 27" qhd 144hz monitor and a rtx2070 and saw some good improvements in performance, but is my CPU holding back performance. It is overclocked to 4.2ghz, will I see any improvement if I upgrade to 3600x? Our do I need to go higher to see any real improvement in frame rates?

Its held back immensely by that CPU. The framerate itself might not skyrocket but you'll get smooth gameplay without stutters and frames spikes. Just get the non-X 3600 with a separate cooler (212 evo seems appropriate).

It'll depend on the game of course, but you should see a healthy improvement in many cases. I actually have an Ivy Bridge setup (mainly for novelty/tinkering purposes), using a Xeon with the same specs as a 4930K, overclocked to 4.5GHz and paired with quad-channel 2400MHz DDR3. Even that gets creamed in a lot of games by the Zen 2 setup that I also have, using the same 1080 Ti in each. By a surprisingly large amount in some cases, and especially in CPU-heavy tasks like emulation. The difference should be even more pronounced coming from a quad-core.

I just upgraded from a 3770k to 3800x and the 1080ti I run was being held back quite a bit by the 3770k.

The rig is primarily used for a VR racing sim (Project Cars 2) and the cpu usage numbers *seemed* fine with the 3770k.(60-ish% IIRC) But I was able to bump pretty much every graphics setting up a notch with the 3800x and the same 1080ti.

I've upgraded from the 3770k @ 4.5 to a 3700x
On paper the upgrade was not very significant, however my experience is that it is much smoother.
I suspect it's because the spread of frametimes is a much tighter curve on the 3700x than the 3770k, hence why it feels smoother.

Mostly this, but with the following HSF:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £26.98 (includes shipping: £0.00)

It's much better than the 212 (not to mention cheaper), while the 212 was good once upon a time it's not a great option at its price point anymore.

Thanks for the replies, I have a dark rock 4 at the moment, so if I upgrade CPU to something like a 3700x it should be fine. Time to save up some more.
