Hi there

So ive had my current build (in signature) since last march. my cpu was running at 4.8ghz on air with temps staying below 60c, except for a few long gaming sessions in summer. since upgrading to windows 8.1, i've had to drop it to 4.4 for it to be stable.

I have recently upgraded my gpu from a 480 to 770gtx and i have been looking at the temps for the gfx card when i noticed my cpu is hitting 90c and above.

now, using HW monitor, it doesnt stay at 80-90, it sort of says 90 for a second then 70 in one second then 45 etc.

i am trying to find out if it's just giving false reading or there is something wrong.

one thing to note is that it doesnt seem to affect the performance at all and that includes BF4 which is i think the most cpu intensive game that i play.

any help would be appreciated

You're probably seeing one of the side effects of long term overclocking... The sensors have given up! A similar thing happened when i used to own a Q6600 overclocked to 3.6GHz.

I could be wrong though, but that's my guess.

It shouldn't be spiking like that imo,I'm also @4.8ghz same CPU and win 8.1,my temps don't spike like that in any game, maybe resetting/clearing cmos and re entering you oc would help

Can't say I've personally experienced temperature sensors failing as a result of overclocking. I ran my 6000+, E8200, Q6600, i7 930 and now my 2500K over clocked and nothing of the sort has happened. I haven't heard of it happening as a result of over clocking either to be honest...

As said above 60 seems too low, so maybe the temperature sensor had always been faulty?
